◆ About the Brand

What is Niftago?

Niftago is a branded pharmaceutical product by Inspiron Scientific Pvt. Ltd. containing Nitrofurantoin 100mg in sustained-release (SR) tablet form. It belongs to the nitrofuran class of antibacterials and is specifically designed for the treatment and prophylaxis of uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).

The sustained-release formulation of Niftago ensures a gradual and consistent release of the active ingredient in the urinary tract, maximizing antibacterial efficacy while significantly reducing gastrointestinal side effects commonly associated with conventional nitrofurantoin formulations. This makes Niftago a preferred choice for both acute treatment and long-term prophylaxis of recurrent UTIs.

Detailed Product Information

Everything healthcare professionals and patients need to know about Niftago — from composition to clinical benefits.

Composition & Formulation
Active Ingredient: Nitrofurantoin 100mg
Dosage Form: Sustained Release (SR) Tablets
Route: Oral Administration
Drug Class: Nitrofuran Antibacterial
Marketed by: Inspiron Scientific Pvt. Ltd.
Mechanism of Action
Nitrofurantoin is reduced by bacterial flavoproteins to reactive intermediates that inactivate or alter bacterial ribosomal proteins, DNA, and other macromolecules. This multi-target mechanism inhibits protein synthesis, aerobic energy metabolism, DNA synthesis, and cell wall synthesis, making it bactericidal at therapeutic urinary concentrations. This multi-site action contributes to the extremely low resistance development.
Therapeutic Indications
Niftago is indicated for:
  • Treatment of acute uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
  • Treatment of cystitis (bladder infection)
  • Long-term prophylaxis of recurrent UTIs
  • Prophylaxis during urological procedures
Key Clinical Benefits
  • High urinary concentration — achieves therapeutic levels specifically in the urinary tract
  • Extremely low bacterial resistance — even after decades of clinical use
  • Effective against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative urinary pathogens including E. coli
  • Sustained-release formulation reduces GI side effects
  • Suitable for both acute treatment and long-term prophylaxis
Dosage & Administration
Acute UTI Treatment: One tablet (100mg) twice daily for 7 days

Prophylaxis: One tablet (100mg) once daily at bedtime as directed by physician

Administration: Take with food or milk to enhance absorption and reduce GI discomfort. Swallow whole — do not crush or chew.

Missed Dose: Take as soon as remembered. If close to the next dose, skip and continue as scheduled. Do not double the dose.
Storage & Packaging
Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Packaging: Available in alu-alu blister pack

Shelf Life: As mentioned on the pack. Do not use after the expiry date.
◆ Patient Awareness

Understanding Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections worldwide, affecting millions of people every year. A UTI occurs when bacteria enter the urinary tract — which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra — and multiply, causing infection and inflammation.

UTIs are significantly more common in women due to shorter urethral length, but men can also be affected, especially with age. Recurrent UTIs (defined as two or more infections in 6 months or three or more in 12 months) are a particularly challenging clinical problem that requires effective prophylactic strategies.

Common Symptoms of UTI

Recognizing the signs early can lead to timely treatment and prevent complications. Consult your doctor if you experience any of the following:

Burning Sensation
A burning or stinging feeling during urination (dysuria) is one of the hallmark symptoms of a urinary tract infection.
Frequent Urination
An increased urge to urinate frequently, often passing only small amounts of urine each time, even shortly after emptying the bladder.
Urgency
A sudden and strong urge to urinate that is difficult to control, often accompanied by discomfort in the lower abdomen.
Cloudy or Foul-Smelling Urine
Urine that appears cloudy, dark, or has an unusually strong or unpleasant odour may indicate bacterial infection in the urinary tract.
Pelvic Pain or Pressure
Pain, pressure, or cramping in the lower abdomen, pelvis, or lower back region. Women may feel pressure around the pubic bone area.
Blood in Urine
Pink, red, or cola-coloured urine (haematuria) can indicate infection. Even a small amount of blood in urine warrants medical attention.
● How It Works

How Niftago Helps

Niftago works through a unique multi-target mechanism to eliminate UTI-causing bacteria effectively and prevent recurrence.

1
Oral Absorption
Niftago’s sustained-release formulation ensures gradual absorption, maintaining consistent therapeutic levels in the urinary tract.
2
Urinary Concentration
Nitrofurantoin achieves high concentrations specifically in the urine, targeting bacteria directly where infection occurs.
3
Multi-Target Attack
Reactive intermediates damage bacterial DNA, ribosomes, and cell wall synthesis — attacking through multiple pathways simultaneously.
4
Bacterial Elimination
This multi-site action kills bacteria effectively while maintaining an extremely low resistance profile even after decades of use.
Important Safety Information
  • Take Niftago only as prescribed by your doctor
  • Always take with food or milk for optimal absorption and to reduce stomach upset
  • Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve early — stopping antibiotics prematurely can lead to resistance
  • Drink plenty of water during treatment to help flush bacteria from the urinary tract
  • Inform your doctor about all current medications, allergies, and medical conditions
  • May cause urine to turn dark yellow or brownish — this is harmless and expected
  • Not recommended in patients with significant renal impairment (CrCl < 60 mL/min)
When to Consult Your Doctor
  • If symptoms do not improve within 3 days of starting treatment
  • If you experience fever, chills, or flank/back pain (may indicate kidney infection)
  • If you have a history of liver disease or pulmonary conditions
  • If you experience numbness, tingling, or weakness in hands or feet (peripheral neuropathy)
  • If you develop persistent cough, difficulty breathing, or chest pain
  • If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • If UTI symptoms recur frequently (3 or more times in a year)
